When discussing the history of American music, it stands to reason that it ought to start with the first Americans. While it is true that Native Americans had no Indigenous traditions as it pertains to a classical sense of music, nor one that expounds a secular song tradition. Their music seems very spiritual in nature. Groups of natives in regular ritual setting expressed themselves musically, indeed it seems to be the primary means of the worship itself. While professing that their songs are unchanged through oral tradition their seems to be no proof due to the lack of a written record.

In the latter part of the nineteenth Century Native American music slowly began to make its way into the North American Musical establishment. Composers like Edward McDowell and Henry Frank Gilbert used Native American themes in their compositions.

Most traditionally, the means of the music of the Native American was simply made, yet through vocalization no less elegantly expressed.

The United States is often said to be a cultural melting pot, taking influences from across the world and creating distinctively new methods of cultural expression. Though aspects of American music can be traced back to specific origins, claiming any particular original culture for a musical element is inherently problematic, due to the constant evolution of American music through transplanting and hybridizing techniques, instruments and genres. Elements of foreign music styles arrived in the United States both through the formal sponsorship of educational and outreach events by individuals and groups, and through informal processes, as in the incidental transplantation of West African music through slavery, and Irish music through immigration. The most distinctly American musics are a result of cross-cultural hybridization through close contact. Slavery, for example, mixed persons from numerous tribes in tight living quarters, resulting in a shared musical tradition that was enriched through further hybridizing with elements of indigenous, Latin and European music. American ethnic, religious and racial diversity has also produced such intermingled genres as the French-African music of the Louisiana Creoles, the Native, Mexican and European fusion Tejano music and the thoroughly hybridized slack-key guitar and other styles of modern Hawaiian music. All of this hybridization of styles and genres, has offered up a rich Melting pot of Lyrical and melodic gumbo that is not present anywhere else in the world. It is my fervent hope that this blog will help explore the differences in our musical heritage, and at the same time, bring us a little closer together as a people. A little lofty for a goal perhaps, but eh…what the hell…doesn’t cost us anything. IF you are interested in the rest of my services, take a look and drop me a line, I would love to talk to you about it.
